چکیده

We compute the expected number of quasars multiply imaged by cluster size dark halos for current wide field quasar surveys by carrying out a large ensemble of ray tracing simulations through clusters from a cosmological N-body simulation of the ΛCDM cosmology. Our calculation predicts ∼ 4 quasar lenses with splittings θ > 10 in the SDSS spectroscopic quasar sample, consistent with the recent discovery of the wide separation lens SDSSJ1004+4112 which has θ = 14.6. The SDSS faint photometric quasar survey will contain ∼ 12 multiply imaged quasars with splittings θ > 10. Of these, ∼ 2 will be lenses with separations θ > 30, and ∼ 2 will be at high redshift (zs ∼ 4).

Gravitational Lensing of the SDSS High-Redshift Quasars

We predict the effects of gravitational lensing on the color-selected flux-limited samples of zs ∼ 4.3 and zs & 5.8 quasars, recently published by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our main findings are: (i) The lensing probability should be 1–2 orders of magnitude higher than for conventional surveys. The expected fraction of multiply-imaged quasars is highly sensitive to redshift and the u...

What if LIGO’s gravitational wave detections are strongly lensed by massive galaxy clusters?

Motivated by the preponderance of so-called ‘heavy black holes’ in the binary black hole (BBH) gravitational wave (GW) detections to date, and the role that gravitational lensing continues to play in discovering new galaxy populations, we explore the possibility that the GWs are strongly lensed by massive galaxy clusters. For example, if one of the GW sources were actually located at z= 1, then...

The shallow slope of the z ∼ 6 quasar luminosity function: limits from the lack of multiple image gravitational lenses

We place a limit on the logarithmic slope of the luminous quasar luminosity function at z ∼ 6 of β > ∼ −3.0 (90%) using gravitational lensing constraints to build on the limit of β > ∼ −3.3 (90%) derived from an analysis of the luminosity distribution (Fan et al. 2003). This tight constraint is obtained by noting that of the two quasars which are lensed by foreground galaxies, neither are multi...

Cosmological Microlensing Statistics: Variability rates for Quasars and GRB Afterglows, and implications for macrolensing magnification bias and flux ratios

The fraction of quasar’s and gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows that vary due to microlensing by the stellar populations of intervening elliptical/S0 galaxies is computed by combining the joint distribution of effective microlensing convergence (κ) and shear (γ) with microlensing magnification patterns. Microlensing is common in multiply imaged sources. We find that 1 in 3 multiply imaged quasars...
